Question #39: What are your views and opinions about Hemp.
I know Hemp will save our planet. Hemp is the key to ending so many environmental concerns. If marijuana is the million dollar cash crop then hemp is the billion dollar cash crop.
Williamsburg Missouri part of Lil Dixie was the largest producer of Hemp for our Navy during WWII - see the proclamation hanging on the wall of Marlene's Restaurant next to Cranes in Williamsburg MO. Check out the Battle of the Hemp Bales in Lexington MO. Missouri is rich in hemp history.
Hemp, or industrial hemp, is a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant species that is grown specifically for the industrial uses of its derived products. It is a fast growing plant and was one of the first plants to be spun into fiber 10,000 years ago. It can be refined into a variety of commercial items, including paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed.
Hemp is a source of fiber and oilseed grown in more than 30 nations. United States production is controlled under drug enforcement laws. To produce industrial hemp in the US the grower must obtain a permit from the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
Although cannabis as a drug and industrial hemp both derive from the species Cannabis sativa and contain the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), they are distinct strains with unique phytochemical compositions and uses. Hemp has lower concentrations of THC and higher concentrations of cannabidiol (CBD), which decreases or eliminates its psychoactive effects. The legality of industrial hemp varies widely between countries. Some governments regulate the concentration of THC and permit only hemp that is bred with an especially low THC content.
This is because a group of scientists created an arbitrary number separating the same plant. Claims that industrial hemp is high in fiber and low in active tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) added to the confusion of the plant. Hemp is dioecious, meaning plants can be male or female.
This distinction by strictly regulating the THC levels of industrial hemp, requiring it to be less than 0.3 percent, compared to THC levels of between 3 to 30 percent in marijuana is a hoax. According to the DEA and Dr. Mahmoud A. ElSohly cannabis fingerprint identification program, 90% of all cannabis eradicated in the USA is ferrell hemp that has tested up to 22% in THC. You see it is about your intent - what do you plan to do with your cannabis/hemp grow. If you plan to make paper that is industrial hemp - that hemp field with have both male and female cannabis plants. If you plan to cultivate cannabis to make CBD products that is cannabis grown for medicinal uses- that cannabis field would be females only.
Industrial hemp is marketed as fiber, as a seed, or as a dual-purpose crop. Some estimates show that the total retail value of hemp products in the U.S. in 2017 was $820 million. This includes food and body products, clothing, auto parts, building materials, and other products.
Cultivated industrial hemp plants usually consist of a spindly main stalk covered with leaves. Considered a low-maintenance crop, hemp plants typically reach between 6 to 15 feet in height. Depending on the purpose, variety and climatic conditions, the period between planting and harvesting ranges from 70 to 140 days. One acre of hemp can yield an average of 700 pounds of grain, which in turn can be pressed into about 22 gallons of oil and 530 pounds of meal. The same acre will also produce an average of 5,300 pounds of straw, which can be transformed into approximately 1,300 pounds of fiber.
Industrial hemp is an excellent rotation crop for traditional crops, because it suppresses weeds and decreases outbreaks of insect and disease problems. Hemp may also rebuild and condition soils by replacing organic matter and providing aeration through its extensive root system.
We need to remove Cannabis Sativa L from the Controlled Substance Act and allow US Farmers to grow Hemp again. We need to remove any arbitrary number regulating cannabis/hemp cultivation. Our country was founded on Hemp, our Constitution was written on hemp. Hemp, Hemp, Hooray!
