Question #45: Do you have any solutions to helping homeless people?

Yes, I do. I realize that the issue of homelessness is multifaceted. So, many reasons why people become homeless. Some causes of homelessness include lack of affordable housing, divorce, lawful eviction, negative cash flow, post traumatic stress disorder, foreclosure, fire, natural disasters (hurricane, earthquake, or flood), mental illness, physical disability, having no family or supportive relatives, substance abuse, and addiction.

We need to start with creating affordable housing. We need to expand the housing available for low income families. We need to work with families making sure they have access to housing. We need to help people get back on their feet - assist them in finding jobs. We also need to really take a look at mental health. We need to end the opioid crisis and address substance abuse and addiction. Finally, we need to take care of all our homeless veterans.

Because we have so many reasons for homelessness we need to take it one step at a time. We need to work with organizations that are already working on ending homelessness. We need to reach out to those in these situations and learn what it needed. N

Solutions are possible, we have to approach this sensitive issue with compassion and respect. So far 77 communities and 3 entire states have ended Veteran homelessness and 4 communities have ended chronic homelessness.

As of January 2018, Missouri had an estimated 5,883 experiencing homelessness on any given day, as reported by Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Of that Total, 706 were family households, 507 were Veterans, 534 were unaccompanied young adults (aged 18-24), and 1,043 were individuals experiencing chronic homelessness.

Public school data reported to the U.S. Department of Education during the 2016-2017 school year shows that an estimated 32,133 public school students experienced homelessness over the course of the year. Of that total, 578students were unsheltered, 2,827 were in shelters, 2,021 were in hotels/motels, and 26,707 were doubled up.
