Two weeks after New Jersey voters approved a ballot initiative to fully legalize cannabis, Humberto Ramirez was sentenced to seven years in state prison and for having 6 pounds of marijuana in his trunk. Humberto is a hard working, loving , father of three girls. Before his incarceration he had never missed a school meeting, dance, recital, or competition, and was the only dad in the dance carpool. It was because of his commitment to his family and support that his wife, Brook was able to achieve her dreams of becoming a nurse.

His family's lives were shattered the day he was convicted. He has been unable to see his family during his incarceration due to the ongoing pandemic and has been unable to access adequate medical care.

Governor Murphy, you have acknowledged the harms of criminalizing cannabis, and the need for retroactive relief to happen alone with legalization. Now is the time to commute the sentence of Humber6to and all New Jersey cannabis prisoners.
