A member of the Rolla City Council was cited Sunday for marijuana possession in Shannon County, according to an online report of Troop G of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Deanne M. Lyons, 25, was issued a ticket at 11:10 a.m. Sunday on charges of misdemeanor possession of marijuana and possession of related paraphernalia. The report states Lyons was cited and released.

Lyons confirmed the citation when reached Sunday by Phelps County Focus and released the following statement Monday:

“I have been open with the public about much of my past, so I will do the same presently. I was issued a citation and released immediately afterwards on the morning of Sunday August 16, 2020 in Shannon County. I have a Missouri Medical Cannabis card for legitimate reasons. I have no prior arrests, misdemeanors, or citations; I have never been brought in by law enforcement for questioning or investigative purposes. I graduated from a nationally-renowned STEM university for my undergraduate degree and a private Christian college for my masters. I also currently serve as a Rolla city councilperson. I bring these points up because I am privileged in many ways, and this happens to people without such privileges all the time. I wasn’t the first to be cited/released that day, and I won’t be the last given our unjust system. This was not a crime. Thank you to those who have sent their love and support!”

Lyons currently represents Ward 6 on the city council. Lyons was elected to the seat in the 2020 municipal election.

The marijuana citation Lyons received Sunday was one of at least six issued Sunday in Shannon County by Troop G officers.

This is an outrageous injustice & grave mistake by law enforcement made aganist a upstanding Missouri citizen who has done many wonderful & positive things for the citizens of Rolla & Phelps County. She is a legal Cannabis Card holder and this arrest violates the current law that she can legally posses and use cannabis as her medication. so drop all charges immediately and apologize to her now.

The MSHP better get it together. The Missouri taxpayer won’t stand for law enforcement violation a persons constitutional rights. Missourians know, all taxpayer officials WORK FOR US, not the other way around…..
