A youth detention center, juvenile detention center (JDC), juvenile detention, juvenile hall or - juvie, is a prison for people under the age of majority- when a young person reaches the age where one is considered to be an adult. Depending upon your state law, this usually happens at some point between 18 and 21.
A private prison - for-profit prison, is a place where people are imprisoned by a third party that is contracted by a government agency. Private prison companies enter into contractual agreements with governments that house inmates; and then pay a per diem, or monthly rate, either for each prisoner in the facility, or for each place available- regardless it the bed is occupied or not.
I believe the prison industrial complex is out of control. When people and organizations start profiting from those who are incarcerated we have a problem. When the judicial branch starts putting buying prison stock with pension pay it has become a conflict of interest. Yes, for profit prisons sell stock.
I believe that the bail/bond industry is exasperating our judicial system. Bail bond agents are yet another cog in the wheel. Another person, business, or organization making money off of people who are innocent till proven guilty. Ironically, Bail bond agents are almost exclusively found in the United States. Ironically, here in Missouri the arresting officer sets your bond? If you bond out your bond could disqualify you from a public defender.
We need to fix our judicial system. We need to eliminate private prisons. We need to remove cannabis from the controlled substance act. We need to remove incentives for law enforcement to arrest people for drug offenses. We need rehabilitation centers not prisons. We need to put strict regulations on big pharma regarding opioids.
